My Laundry Room Makeover
I’ve lived in my home for about a year now, and little by little, I’ve been transforming it into a space that truly feels like me. This weekend, I finally tackled the laundry room, and what a transformation it has been.
When I first moved in, the laundry room felt more like a dungeon than a functional space. It had what I called “dungeon doors,” which were the first thing to go. Inside was a stackable washer and dryer, a deep freezer, wall shelving, and a large cement utility sink that honestly took me an entire week to disassemble and remove.
Once the room was finally cleared out, I was able to start fresh. I installed natural hickory wood cabinetry, which I absolutely love because it gives the room an earthy, warm feeling. I also replaced the old washer and dryer and started searching for the perfect wallpaper to tie everything together.
Recently, I found a wallpaper with a muted black branch pattern that complements the wood cabinetry beautifully. It instantly brought back memories of the old days of wallpapering, carefully lining up patterns seam by seam and hoping everything matched perfectly. That part can still be a challenge!
This wallpaper was a little different because it was peel-and-stick rather than the traditional paste-and-water type. It was thicker and fairly easy to work with, but installing full ceiling-to-floor panels by yourself can definitely get tricky. With traditional wallpaper, you could wet it, roll it, and reposition it more easily. With peel-and-stick wallpaper, once it touches the wall, it sticks, so you have to pay close attention to where your pattern lines up before placing it down. You can unpeel and reposition it if you need to, but carefully so as not to rip the paper.
I started at each seam and slowly peeled the backing away while smoothing it onto the wall as I worked across. It took patience, but the final result turned out beautifully.
After finishing the wallpaper, I added a black shelf above the washer and dryer to hold laundry essentials and dryer sheets. The black shelf ties in perfectly with the muted black branches in the wallpaper, as well as the black cabinet hardware and ceiling light fixture.
I’ve already picked out flooring for the space, a pebble stone tile that will complement the wood and branch details and give the room an organic, outdoor-inspired feel. Unfortunately, my water heater recently broke down and had to be replaced, so the flooring project is temporarily on hold.
Once the flooring is finished, the laundry room will finally be complete and will be a space I love.
